Save Olvera Street Traditions NOW!

By the end of April 2010, the City of Los Angeles plans to increase the rents to El Pueblo Merchants wich will eventually result in the EVICTION generations of family merchants from Olvera Street.
Olvera merchants who are supported by Councilmember Jose Huizar in principle, are asking the City to respect their legal rights, under Proposition H (an initiative passed in 1992 by LA voters that assured this community negotiated leases in an effort to preserve the area).
Instead, the City, through its El Pueblo Monument Commission, is demanding rent increases of 200-900% without the protection of long term leases, as of April 1, 2010 and is fully aware that their actions represent a death sentence for the 80 year old Mexican cultural icon.
This means an end to family traditions like the Blessing of the Animals, Las Posadas, Day of the Dead and other cultural offerings enjoyed by many generations of Angelenos.
Instead of trimming a wasteful budget of $5.5 million dollars per year, the El Pueblo Managers are trying to balance their budget by breaking the backs of a majority of founding merchants families responsible for initiating and preserving the Olvera Street landmark at the City's Birthplace since 1930.

A finales de Abril del 2010 la Ciudad de los Angeles planea DESALOJAR a generaciones de comerciantes de La Calle Olvera.
Los comerciantes de Calle Olvera CON EL APOYO DE CONSEJAL JOSE HUIZAR han solicitado a la ciudad respetar sus derechos legales bajo la Proposicion H aprovada en 1992 por el voto de la ciudadania, misma que garantiza a los comerciantes el derecho a negociar Contratos de largo plazo para preservar el area.
A cambio la ciudad a traves de La Comision del Pueblo de Los Angeles esta exigiendo a los comerciantes un aumento en las rentas del 200 al 900% sin la proteccion de Contratos al Primero de Abril del 2010, la Ciudad sabe que esto seria una sentencia de muerte que pondria fin a 80 anos de mantener y preservar la Cultura Mexicana.
Esto representaria la terminacion de nuestras tradiciones como: La Bendicion de los Animales, Las Posadas, Dia de Los Muertos y otros eventos culturales ofrecidos por los comerciantes a muchas generaciones de Angelinos que ya no contarian con otro lugar como Placita Olvera para seguir fomentando y exponiendo tan bellas, coloridas, historicas y culturales tradiciones.
Durante este periodo de Colapso economico el presupuesto de gastos de los Gerentes del Pueblo alcanza los 5.5 Millones de dolares por ano. Su Despilfarro presupuestal tratan de balancearlo a costillas de los comerciantes y sus familias fundadoras de Calle Olvera encargadas de preservar y mantener vivas las tradicones mexicanas en el corazon de Los Angeles desde 1930.
